Kwaidan's First Release

Here is a new tape from Accidental Guest Recordings from a group called Kwaidan which rumor has it is made up of members of Locrian, Catherine, and Zelienople

There's something unsettling about this live recording from Chicago trio Kwaidan, that few bands can put to tape. This recording pushes and pulls the listener, builds up tension and breaks it over and over again. The backbone of this work is not consistency of sound, rather, it is the attack of cymbals and drums that explode to the forefront, only to disappear, bringing to mind the beauty that would take place if Loren Connors played in Taj Mahal Travellers. While it's easy for a work like this to leave too much aural space to the listener, Kwaidan breathtakingly uses each second of these 36 minutes to fill every possible gap without overcrowding any sound. Some toil for years to create a work as consistent as this recording, but Kwaidan does it effortlessly. That in itself makes this cassette uncanny, ethereal, and a true experimental rarity.

RIYL: Taj Mahal Travellers, Loren Connors, Celer, Svarte Greiner, Elegi

Tape Label Spotlight: Worthless Recordings

Having been alerted to the existence of Worthless Recordings by Dead Formats, I checked out their releases and was knocked out by a bunch of their releases, particularly their Burial Ground "Living Dead" series (Burial Ground is doing a series on the George Romero zombie movies). Seeing as how the latest Burial Ground is now available (limited to 30 tapes) and is the last of the Living Dead series, and Worthless also released a tape from Worn Vessel (The Refuse Of Nature limited to 50).

Check out Worthless for yourself here; there are sound samples and ordering information for interested parties.

Check Out Dhusk

I was turned onto this from Demian over at dead formats, and I hope he doesn't mind my lifting some his words for the simple fact that they sold me on checking Dhusk out:

This is what I am always on the lookout for. Dark, bleak and hopeless... It's that sounds that feels like you are trapped in the belly of a hulking freighter as it slowly rumbles towards oblivion and all you can here are the distant sounds of the engine, crew and whatever hellish flotsam is smashing against the thick hull.

Check out the rest of his review here.

Listen below... order the cassette or the cassette +CDr (which contains an unedited version of the second side of the tape) here; but as always, these are limited to 20 copies and there are definitely less than that available at this point.

Flowers Of St. Francis Volume I...

...is now up for order (the subscriptions to the series are all gone, but EL is offering all 5 individually). The brain child of Tim Macuga (Have A Nice Life), Flowers of ST Francis is another animal entirely apart from his other musical force.

Sprawling, claustrophobic, expansive, distorted, mangled, droning, recorded on an 8-track with an analog synth and a creaking old piano, Macuga has managed to craft a series of moving, intimate compositions that seem to crawl from the speakers.

This is music for music's sake - music made for those who truly appreciate and wish to experience music in its pure form. In other words, it ain't party music - it's the closest thing to classical we've ever released, if you can call stream-of-consciousness dronescapes and crackling, echoey organs, choirs, and disembodied fuzz classical. We can, and do. This shit is an experience like no other. I have literally never heard anything like this, and neither have you.

Part of a Super-limited series of 5 E.Ps. Cassette only. Features original artwork from illustrator Caralai Fitzgibbon. Check out more of her work here.

Swamp Horse Pre-Orders Are Live

Swamp Horse join the Handmade Birds roster with this cassette as their first release. Winter Ghost is sure to be a further exploration of the harsh noise and experimentation that the these two gentlemen are known for in their circles.

Josh Lay has been a staple in the Kentucky-and-all-noise-blackened for years. Swamp Horse sees him at his most versatile, exploring textures alongside collaborator Morgan Rankin that embody the dichotomy of beauty and that which might truly terrify.

Edition: 100 (20 solid green, 80 smokey clear) with artwork designed by Josh Lay.

Go to Handmade Birds, click on the Cassette Series, and then Swamp Horse to hear some of the sounds that this tape will be cranking out. Order Here
